Speech workshops meet every weekday for two (2) weeks (Mon – Fri) for 90 minutes each day on the following schedule. The prerequisite for taking a Competition Speech class is the Intro to Public Speaking class.
Elementary Competition Speech (Gr 2-5): focuses on teaching and practicing the pillars of public speaking. Students will deliver speeches using 3 methods of delivery (manuscript, outline, and impromptu), creating speeches based on the three speech purposes (persuading, informing, entertaining). The class project is a 3-5 minute speech that students will deliver in a showcase on the final day of class with families able to attend. There will be 30-60 minutes of homework each class.
Middle/High School Competition Speech (Gr 6-12): is the highest level of varsity speech, with the expectations and goals of a traditional high school speech team. The workshop focuses on building the specific skills needed to compete at tournaments, with projects designed to prepare for speech competition in the 2025-26 school year. Students will learn six speech events: Impromptu, Extemporaneous, Dramatic Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Original Oratory and Informative. On the final day of class, students will deliver a speech in a showcase with families able to attend. All work will be completed in class – there will be no homework.
